Classroom Activity
Lesson objectives
- To be able to make a model similar to the Jewel of Muscat.
- To be able to adjust the design of the boat to improve stability.
- To be able to research how ship and boat designs have changed over the years.
Success criteria
- Can work scientifically to construct, test and develop a model of the Jewel of Muscat.
- Can write an account of their experiments.
- Can research and compare how boat designs have changed.
Thinking skills
- Evaluating: judge, select, appraise, argue
- Analysing: differentiate, distinguish, examine, experiment, test
- Applying: demonstrate, use, solve, operate, illustrate
- Remembering: duplicate, recall, reproduce, define, list
Resources
- A large clear container of water such as a fish tank or a plastic bowl.
- Modelling clay or plasticine.
- Small water container for each group.
- Wooden sticks e.g. satay sticks.
- Paper.
- Scissors.
- Exercise books.
- Internet access to the Jewel of Muscat website.
Starter activity
Show the 3D model of the Jewel of Muscat on the web site. Identify and discuss the parts of the ship. If there is no access to the web site use a hard copy of the ship with the parts marked.
Main activities
- Divide students into small groups and give a ball of modelling clay (approximately 50 grams).
- Guide and monitor the students through the activity sheet.
Plenary
- Elicit 1 or 2 ‘learning opportunities’ (difficulties) that materialised in the lesson.
- Brainstorm the learning opportunities to come up with 3 possible solutions.
- Vote on the best solution.
