Fitting out

The Jewel of Muscat at the Marina Bandhar Al-Rowdha
Soon she will be fitted out with masts and sails
Tom Vosmer tells National Geographic he's pleased with her performance
Tom Vosmer and Babu Sankaran are keeping a careful eye for leaks
But all is well, so more ballast can be added
With reduced ballast the ship is riding high now
At the bow the stitching is clearly visible underwater
A mark shows where the waterline will be with full ballasting
The Jewel is very different from its neighbours
There's plenty of room up on deck
There are no nails or screws in the ship
Even the decking is fastened with rope
Every plank has been stitched together, then the holes plugged
The ship reflected in the water
The Jewel of Muscat is proud to fly the Omani flag
With the ship gone the yard has been tidied
Work begins on the spars to support the sails
Each Poona log is marked up
Babu Sankaran begins shaping the spars
It takes skill to use hand tools
